Idiom Day!
Students have been focusing on figurative language this week
in reading and in writing. This coming Monday, 5th grade students
here at Summit will have the opportunity to dress up to represent an idiom of
their choice. Students have been given a list of idiom examples if needed. If school would happen to be canceled Monday
because of inclement weather, we will have our Idiom Day on Tuesday.
We have asked students to be creative and use materials they
already have. We do not expect parents to go spend money on costume materials.
Participation is optional. We are asking
students to not share what idiom they are representing with their classmates,
but hoping for peers to try and determine each idiom themselves instead!
Remember: An idiom is a word or phrase that has a different
meaning than its literal meaning.
Example: When Lee’s mom asked him a question and he didn’t
answer back, she quickly realized that he had
his head in the clouds! Of course we
know Lee’s head was not REALLY in the clouds, but that he was day dreaming. To
model this example, one might wear a hat covered in fluffy white cotton balls
to represent clouds.
