First Grade Research

Our Flat Stanley geography unit has been another success! We learned all about maps, globes, the compass rose, and map keys. We are still getting Flat Stanleys back, and as they come in, we place them on our wall map to keep track of Flat Stanley's travels.

While Flat Stanleys continue to come in, we are ready to turn our attention to February's social studies unit, America the Beautiful. This is a fun unit all about important people like George Washington and Abraham Lincoln and the symbols of our country, such as the White House, the Statue of Liberty, and the American flag.

We began this unit this week with some first grade research. We divided the class into two groups: George Washington experts and Abraham Lincoln experts. Students then read books and gathered information about their president, and they took notes in their America the Beautiful journals. Then we gathered into our groups and made posters about the presidents we are becoming experts on. Here's a peek at what first grade research looks like:

We'll be working on this unit all through the month of February. Thanks for stopping by our blog, and I'm looking forward to seeing you at conferences next week!
