First Grade News

Hello again, Parents!

Here is this week's first grade update:

  • This week's challenge words are: chart and world.
  • Century Elementary invites you to attend Grandparents' Day on Tuesday, November 22nd.  First grade's Grandparent's Day program will be from 10:00-11:00 and will include songs, readings, prizes, and an opportunity for first graders to show off their classroom and have their photo taken with their grandparents.  Even if a grandparent cannot attend, students are welcome to invite a grandfriend-a parent, neighbor, relative, or family friend.
  • On November 7, 2011, all students and staff will be participating in an Academic Pep Rally honoring our students and staff for achieving Accreditation with Distinction in Performance for ten years in a row.  Century Elementary students will be attending the Academic Pep Rally at the Nixa Jr. High on November 7 at 10:45 a.m.  Students will be riding the bus to that location.  Students will be supervised at all times.  When we return to school, the school lunch that day will be a sack lunch.  If for any reason you wish for your child to not attend, please notify the school office at 724-3800 as soon as possible.  Parents/guardians are welcome to attend.  All students and staff are asked to wear red to the Academic Pep Rally.
  • Please remember to send your first grader's library books to school each Wednesday to be returned.  If your first grader forgets his/her library books on Wednesday and is unable to check out books, or if your first grader is ready for new books before Wednesday, he/she is welcome to go to the library before school to exchange books.  This is fine for any morning except Wednesday morning, since that is our library day, and learning to select and check out books will be part of the lesson that day.  Exchanging library books before school is also a great help to me, since students do not have to miss out on classroom learning time to exchange books.  Thank you for your help with this!
  • Using dice to practice counting is part of many of the math games in our math curriculum.  However, rolling dice always leads to the loss of a few dice under the furniture and to unknown locations.  I've been searching for a solution to this problem in order to preserve our dice and make math time more efficient, and I recently came across the following picture.  Someone thought to use a small plastic container to "roll" dice without losing them!  So, I just want to ask around and see if anyone might have some spare little containers for our class to use for this purpose.  They should be quite small, just big enough to fit 3 dice in at once.  If you have one or more you could donate, we would greatly appreciate it!

  • In our last update, I asked you to save the date for our Artifact Museum on November 17, and I said the time would be at 6:00.  I have decided to change this time to 5:00.  Invitations to follow!
  • Please continue recording books your first graders reads this month on your November reading log.  This reading log will be due at the end of November.
