Happy Friday!
Our third week of school was so much fun! Now that we have our procedures and our routine down, we are really getting to the fun stuff. We got to use our iPads in the classroom and in science we have been measuring, observing, and experimenting (humanely) with worms! Next week in reader's workshop, we will be discussing and practicing asking strong, useful questions to help us get a deeper understanding of our reading. In writing, we're ready for the drafting and revising steps of the writing process. In math, we'll continue working to determine which multiplication facts are the trickiest for us, and we'll learn new strategies to tackle them. I'm so happy when I log in to XtraMath.com and see that my students are even practicing their multiplication facts at home! If you're not sure how to log in, please let me know!
Reminders:
- If you need to reach me by email, you can reach me at layneeckhardt@nixaschools.net. Our @nixastudents.net addresses have been disabled to anyone outside our network for the security of our students.
- Your child's third grade MAP test results came home today. Please review the scores and the attached letter, and feel free to email me with any questions.
- If your child attended JTSD last year: Since you went to the mandatory iPad meeting last year, all you will need to do to check out your child's iPad is fill out and sign the iPad pledge and protection plan paperwork that came home today. When I receive the signed pledge, the signed protection plan form, and the iPad protection plan payment (see form for cost), your child will be able to take his/her iPad home. You will not need to attend the iPad meeting.
- If your child is new to JTSD: You will need to attend the mandatory iPad meeting Tuesday, September 3rd from 6:30-7:30 at JTSD. At the meeting you will be provided all the paperwork and information you will need to check out your child's iPad for the school year.
- Now that your child is a fourth grader, he/she has the opportunity to join JTSD's choir, The Discovery Singers! A purple letter from Mrs. Sorenson, our music teacher, is coming home today with more information.
- A letter from Dr. Chastain with more information about our new standards-based grade card is coming home today in your child's red folder. Attached to the letter, you will find specific information about the skills and concepts your child will be responsible for during first quarter in fourth grade. I will be assessing each of these skills using a 3, 2, or 1. 3 means that your child has mastered the skill/concept, 2 means that your child has not mastered the skill/concept but is making progress, and 1 means that improvement is needed. As you see your child's graded work beginning to come home in his/her red folder, please look over it and look for these numbers. This way you can stay informed on how you child is doing with each skill, and you'll know specifically on what skills your child needs to focus. Please let me know if you have any questions about this. I am very excited to use this format to communicate your child's progress!
- Please note that we will usually not get to our Brain Books on Fridays.
- As always, please click through to JTSD's website to review school-wide updates and information.
